The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is inviting applications for a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) opportunity for language instructors to support its Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) based in Cairo. This home-based, non-staff position offers a flexible contract of up to 11 months and provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to FAO’s mission of transforming agrifood systems while promoting multilingualism across the organization. About the Role
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality language training for FAO personnel. Through online group and individual sessions, instructors will enhance participants’ language skills—listening, reading, speaking, and writing—ensuring the Organization maintains the high level of multilingualism required to achieve its mandate. Typically, language classes will run twice a week for 4 to 6 months, with two to three sessions delivered per year depending on session duration.
Reporting to the HR Officer, the language instructor will also:
- Conduct placement tests to assess learners’ current proficiency.
- Deliver courses strictly in the target language.
- Maintain updated class folders with syllabi, lesson plans, attendance, and activity logs.
- Provide detailed progress reports for each student.
- Ensure all courses align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and FAO’s internal language standards.

- Education: University degree in languages, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education from an institution recognized by IAU/UNESCO.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years teaching adults in an international setting, including language training and assessment.
- Language Proficiency: Full proficiency (level C) in one of FAO’s official languages: Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic only), English, French, Spanish, Russian, or Chinese. Knowledge of an additional FAO language (level B) is an advantage.
- Technical Skills: Experience delivering Modern Standard Arabic courses in compliance with the Arabic Language Proficiency Test (ALPT), ability to create and maintain course syllabi, and familiarity with online teaching platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, etc.).
