The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is inviting motivated students and recent graduates to apply for a unique traineeship opportunity within its Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU). This professional placement, located at UNITAR Headquarters in Geneva, offers an invaluable chance to gain hands-on experience within the UN system and deepen one’s understanding of multilateral diplomacy.

About the Traineeship

  • Compensation: The traineeship is unpaid, but trainees receive a monthly lump sum of 900 CHF to support transportation and miscellaneous costs.

This traineeship offers an immersive experience in a multicultural, professional UN environment. Selected candidates will work closely with UNITAR experts to support the delivery and management of the Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy and other related academic programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Programme Officer, the trainee will be involved in:

  • Supporting the design, preparation, and implementation of UNITAR’s Master Programme and related qualifications;
  • Adapting online learning materials and training packages to meet academic and quality standards;
  • Assisting with the admissions process, communications, and outreach activities;
  • Liaising with academic partners, participating organizations, and beneficiaries;
  • Conducting research to inform new training initiatives and academic partnerships;
  • Supporting the overall outreach and community engagement strategy of the programme.

Tasks may evolve during the traineeship to reflect operational needs and programme priorities.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within two years) from a degree programme in international relations, political science, law, education, history, languages, or related fields.
  • Demonstrate strong skills in writing, research, organization, and administration.
  • Possess proficiency in computer applications, including e-learning tools, MS Office, and online research.
  • Show motivation to engage with training methodologies, instructional design, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Have excellent written and spoken English. Knowledge of French or Spanish is a strong asset.
