The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) offers a wide range of internship opportunities—both online and in-person—for motivated students and recent graduates eager to gain hands-on experience in international development. These internships provide a unique entry point into the UN system, allowing young professionals to contribute meaningfully to global efforts on poverty reduction, climate action, governance, digital innovation, and sustainable development.

In a rapidly changing world shaped by technology, learning, and global challenges, UNDP continues to invest in the next generation of talent. Interns are placed across various teams, regional hubs, and country offices worldwide, where they support real projects that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From research and policy analysis to communications, digital solutions, and program implementation, UNDP internships are designed to build practical skills while offering insight into how development work happens on the ground.

At the core of every UNDP internship is a simple but powerful idea: people drive sustainable development. By supporting teams, strengthening systems, and contributing fresh perspectives, interns play an active role in helping UNDP deliver impact in more than 170 countries and territories. Many internships offer a monthly stipend (amount varies by duty station or modality), making these opportunities more accessible to talented candidates from diverse backgrounds.

    What You Will Do

As a UNDP intern, you will work closely with experienced professionals and contribute to projects that support sustainable development at global, regional, or country levels. Your responsibilities will vary depending on the team and duty station, but typically include a combination of research, coordination, and practical support.

You may assist with conducting research and data analysis, preparing reports, policy briefs, and presentations, and supporting the design and implementation of development programmes. Interns often contribute to communications by drafting content for websites, social media, newsletters, and knowledge products, helping share UNDP’s work with a wider audience.

In many roles, you will support day-to-day project coordination—organizing meetings, taking notes, tracking progress, and liaising with internal teams and external partners. Depending on your background, you may also work on digital tools, monitoring and evaluation, innovation initiatives, or administrative processes that keep programmes running smoothly.

Throughout the internship, you will gain exposure to the UN system, develop professional skills, and learn how international development initiatives are planned and delivered in real-world contexts. Most importantly, you will contribute your ideas, energy, and perspective to work that aims to create lasting, positive impact for communities around the world.

    Internship Details & Requirements

To be eligible for a UNDP internship, candidates must meet the following general requirements. Specific positions may have additional or more specialized criteria.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a recognized university at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. Fields of study may include, but are not limited to, international relations, development studies, economics, public policy, social sciences, environmental studies, information technology, communications, or other related disciplines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, particularly in English. Knowledge of additional UN languages such as French, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese is considered an asset, depending on the duty station and role.

Candidates should demonstrate a genuine interest in international development and the work of the United Nations. UNDP values interns who are motivated, proactive, and able to work effectively in a multicultural and inclusive environment.

Basic computer proficiency is required, including familiarity with common tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar platforms. For certain internships, skills in data analysis, design, research methods, or digital tools may be an advantage.

Applicants must be able to commit to the full duration of the internship, which typically ranges from three to six months, either on a full-time or part-time basis, depending on the opportunity.

    Stipend: Approx. $1000/month
    Location: Online/Offsite
Diversity Commitment: UNDP encourages applicants from all backgrounds

UNDP is committed to fairness, inclusion, and a safe workplace. It does not tolerate harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or abuse of authority. Candidates may be considered for similar roles at the same level, and no fees are ever charged during recruitment.

    Application

All UNDP internship applications are submitted online through the official UNDP careers and UN Volunteer platforms. Interested candidates should regularly check available internship openings, as opportunities are posted throughout the year across different offices and regions.

To apply, select an internship that matches your academic background and interests, then carefully review the eligibility requirements and application deadline. Prepare the required documents, which typically include a recent CV or résumé and a motivation letter explaining your interest in the internship, your relevant skills, and how the opportunity aligns with your career goals. Some positions may also request academic transcripts, writing samples, or portfolios.

Applications must be submitted before the stated deadline, as late submissions are not accepted. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for an interview or further assessment. Due to the high volume of applications, only selected applicants are usually notified.

There is no application fee for UNDP internships. Applicants are encouraged to apply early and ensure that all information provided is accurate and complete.

In short, you won’t just gain experience. You’ll help shape how people learn, lead, and thrive across the UN system.
