The UNESCO Internship Programme is more than just a line on a CV — it is a chance to step inside one of the world’s leading international organizations and gain first-hand experience of how global cooperation works. Designed for students and recent graduates, the programme offers a unique learning environment where academic knowledge meets real-world practice, all while contributing to UNESCO’s mission in education, science, culture, and communication.
What the Internship Is About
Through the UNESCO Internship Programme, interns are given practical assignments that help them better understand UNESCO’s mandate, programmes, and internal processes. Interns work alongside experienced professionals, develop technical and professional skills, and gain exposure to an international and multicultural workplace. The focus is on learning, growth, and meaningful contribution rather than routine administrative work.

Who Can Apply
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 20 years old at the time of application. In terms of academic background, UNESCO welcomes applications from a wide range of students and recent graduates:
- Students who are currently enrolled in the third or final year of a Bachelor’s degree
- Students pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD (or an equivalent qualification)
- Recent graduates who have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD within the last 12 months
For technical or vocational assignments, candidates must be in the final year of a specialized technical or vocational programme, or have graduated from such an institution within the past 12 months.
Language and Skills Requirements
Applicants should have an excellent command of either English or French, both written and spoken. Having a working knowledge of the second language is considered an advantage and may be required for certain roles, particularly at UNESCO Headquarters.
Strong computer skills are essential, especially in using office-related software. Beyond technical abilities, UNESCO looks for candidates who are team-oriented, adaptable to an international work environment, and equipped with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Practical Details to Keep in Mind
- Duration: Internships last between one and six months
- Visa: Interns are responsible for obtaining any required visas
- Travel: All travel arrangements and costs must be covered by the intern
- Medical Insurance: Interns must provide proof of comprehensive health insurance valid for the entire internship period and location
- Supporting Documents: Before starting, interns must submit proof of identity and academic status (enrolment certificate or diploma)
Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month, plus one additional working day per complete month of internship.
Applying for UNESCO Internships
Applications are submitted online on the official website at https://careers.unesco.org/go/Internships-and-volunteers/783902/
Preparation is key. Applicants should have their CV or résumé and motivation letter ready before starting the application. During the process, candidates answer questions about their skills, competencies, experience, and areas of interest. The full application must be completed within one hour, and it can be submitted in either English or French only.
If your official documents are not in English or French, you must provide an unofficial translation in PDF format. It is also important to ensure your contact details remain valid for the full six-month consideration period.
UNESCO internships are unpaid, and there is no financial compensation or allowance. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee placement, as the number of qualified applicants is far greater than the available opportunities. UNESCO does not provide individual feedback to all applicants; only selected candidates are contacted.
