About the Programme

The United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Africa is conducted under the
United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law.
This Programme was established by General Assembly resolution 2099 (XX) of 20 December 1965
to promote a better understanding of international law as a means to strengthen peace, security, and cooperation among States.

The course is organized by the Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs, in cooperation with:

  • The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
  • The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
  • The African Union

Objectives

  • Provide high-quality training in international law by leading scholars and practitioners from various legal systems.
  • Deepen participants’ knowledge of core and regionally relevant topics of international law.
  • Encourage exchange of experiences and promote cooperation on legal matters within the African region.
  • Support qualified professionals—especially government officials and teachers from developing or emerging economies—to enhance their expertise in the legal work of the United Nations.

Course Content

The curriculum includes seminars on core topics such as:

  • Introduction to international law
  • Treaty law
  • State responsibility
  • Diplomatic and consular relations
  • International peace and security
  • Peaceful settlement of international disputes
  • Law and institutions of the African Union
  • International human rights law
  • Law of the sea
  • International humanitarian law
  • International criminal law
  • International environmental law
  • International trade and investment law

Format and Materials

  • The course consists of interactive seminars and discussions for maximum engagement.
  • Participants are expected to actively take part in discussions.
  • Each participant will receive comprehensive training materials.
  • Certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of the full course.

Eligibility and Participation

Applicants must:

  • Have a legal background and professional experience in international law.
  • Be fluent in French (spoken and written).
  • Be nationals of UN Member States belonging to the Group of African States.
  • Be available to attend the entire course in person.

The course accommodates up to 30 participants.

Selection Process

Selection will consider:

  • Academic and professional qualifications
  • Relevance of training to the applicant’s current role
  • Geographic and gender balance

Applications from qualified women are strongly encouraged.

Financial Arrangements

  • Fellowship recipients will receive:
    • Economy-class travel
    • Accommodation
    • Medical insurance
    • Training materials
    • A modest stipend for living expenses
  • Self-funded participants are welcome (limited spaces) but must cover all their own costs including travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses.
