Purpose of the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an Advisor Radiation Safety, reporting to the Specialist Radiation Safety. The primary purpose of this role is to support the Specialist Radiation Safety in the implementation of radiation management programmes at Rössing to ensure compliance with legal requirements, RUL standards and related international standards.

Key Performance Areas

Maintaining HSE standards with the commitment to reduce injuries and implement HSE improvement plans.
Liaises with the section heads and foremen in the relevant departments to provide and coordinate technical support and advise through face-to-face interactions and area inspections.
Uses appropriate communication mediums to ensure the effective dissemination of Radiation and Health information and messages.
Ensures that systems are in place to measure, prevent and mitigate health impacts through continuous support and improvement of health management performance.
Applies and appropriate level of technical knowledge in the management of Health and Radiation Risks.
Ascertains new and applicable equipment needed to be purchased to monitor identified Radiation hazards.
Commissions Radiation monitoring instruments.
Conducts research to identify better and improved work practices that guarantee the collection of high-quality data.
Responsible for conducting technical, system and performance audits across all areas of the mine to ensure alignment with Rössing Uranium standards and policies, National and International regulations, and standards relevant to radiation safety.
Initiate cost saving ideas aimed at reducing overall area and mine costs.
Conducting surveys, monitoring radiation levels, documenting measurements and analysing data.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

A recognised Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 / 8 or in a relevant field such as Radiation Protection, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in radiation safety, monitoring, compliance or shipment quality control in a mining environment.

A recognised (three) 3 Year’s National Diploma in a relevant field such as Radiation Protection, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field with a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in radiation safety, monitoring, compliance or shipment quality control in a mining environment.
Valid B (Code 08) Driver’s Licence
Certification in Radiation Safety officer (RSO) is an added advantage.
A Police certificate of conduct of not older than six months is required. A record will not automatically disqualify candidates.

Job Purpose

Vacancy exists for a role of Advisor: Occupational Hygiene reporting to the Senior Advisor Occupational Hygiene and plays an integral role in implementing and ensuring all Occupational Health Standards and legislative requirements are adhered to, maintained and reviewed on a regular basis. By implementing and sustainably maintaining the above the company will be positioned as a leader in Occupational Health and Hygiene Practices and provide a firm foundation by which to respond to Occupational Hygiene (OH) related inquiries from customers, stakeholders and other interested parties. This will reduce RUL’s Occupational Hygiene liabilities as all possible impacts/ aspects from our processes are managed and controlled.

Key Performance Areas

Ensures that systems are in place to measure, prevent and mitigate health impacts through continuous support and improvement of health management performance
Applies an appropriate level of technical knowledge in the management of Health Risks.
Integrates Occupational health with business context and processes.
Maintains Occupational health related systems. Ensuring compliance with all applicable Occupational policies, regulations, standards and governance requirements.
Ensures all calibrations and maintenance of equipment are kept up-to-date.
Researches exposures of individuals as and when required (medical investigations).
Conducts and supports occupational exposure assessments and investigations to inform appropriate health risk management interventions.
Follows through on occupational related hazards, and verify if addressed effectively to eliminate or minimize risks.
Recommends improvements to processes and discusses these with internal stakeholders involved in the process.
Implements a Risk Based Occupational Hygiene Monitoring Programme addressing all applicable stressors
Ensures maintenance of Occupational Standards based work practices and programmes through periodical and critical evaluation of all steps of the occupational hygiene practice from recognition of hazards, to the implementation of hazard prevention and control programmes.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

• A recognised Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 / 8 in Environmental Health or Occupational Hygiene, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in an occupational health environment in mining, manufacturing, processing or similar industrial environment.

• A three recognised (three) 3 Year’s National Diploma in in Environmental Health or Occupational Hygiene with a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in in an occupational health environment in mining, manufacturing, processing or similar industrial environment.
• A valid Code B Driver’s License

• A Police certificate of conduct of not older than six months is required. A record will not automatically disqualify candidates.
