The Starvation and Humanitarian Crisis Division

This position is part of GRC’s Starvation and Humanitarian Crisis Division—a globally recognized team pioneering efforts to prohibit, prevent, and ensure accountability for mass starvation and associated violations. The division has deep expertise in the crime of starvation under international law and leverages open-source intelligence (OSINT) in its investigative work.

The team engages in:

  • Complex legal and OSINT-based investigations

  • Advocacy and policy development

  • Supporting accountability mechanisms, especially in conflict-affected regions such as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)


Role Overview: Junior OSINT Researcher

GRC is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Junior OSINT Researcher to support ongoing open-source investigations into starvation-related crimes and humanitarian crises.

This is a short-term (3-month), remote contract ideal for individuals with experience in OSINT, international law, or human rights investigations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Open-Source Information Gathering
    Assist in collecting and verifying open-source data for investigative use, in line with international standards.

  • Data Preservation
    Archive and safeguard OSINT material following legal and technical best practices.

  • Legal Research
    Conduct legal research on topics related to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Criminal Law (ICL).

  • Reporting & Drafting
    Contribute to written deliverables, including drafting sections of reports and summaries of findings.

  • Training Material Development
    Support the creation of training materials focused on open-source investigations and relevant legal frameworks.

  • General Project Support
    Assist with various project activities to ensure timely and effective delivery of outputs.


Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in open-source investigations, ideally within humanitarian or legal fields

  • Strong ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

  • Creative and flexible approach to problem-solving in fast-paced environments

  • Practical experience in handling sensitive or confidential materials

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Arabic

Desirable Experience

  • Regional expertise in MENA, particularly Syria

  • Familiarity with case management systems and data visualization tools

  • Advanced academic background in public international law, especially IHL or ICL
