About the Role
The Junior Exploration Geologist is responsible for supporting mineral exploration programs by collecting, documenting, interpreting, and managing geological data. The role contributes to the discovery, evaluation, and development of new mineral deposits while ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
This position is ideal for graduates seeking practical experience in mineral exploration, geological mapping, drilling supervision, and field data collection.
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for:
- Documenting geological characteristics and recording structural data.
- Selecting, marking, and preparing geological samples.
- Ensuring Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) procedures are followed.
- Measuring and recording recovery, RQD, IRS, and specific gravity (SG).
- Monitoring drilling and sampling crews to maintain quality standards.
- Plotting geological information on sections and preparing geological logs.
- Updating geological software databases.
- Managing core photography and core handling procedures.
- Collecting geological field data and preparing geological maps.
- Supervising drilling operations and confirming drill locations and orientations.
- Preparing sample submissions for laboratory analysis.
- Supporting geophysical surveys and geochemical sampling programs.
- Performing geological data entry and quality checks.
- Producing technical reports, maps, sections, and presentations.
- Monitoring QAQC laboratory results.
- Assisting with supervision of field and geotechnical personnel.
- Participating in safety meetings and maintaining compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Grade 12 certificate.
- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology (NQF Level 7).
- No previous work experience is required.
- Pre-graduation internship experience will be an added advantage.
Working knowledge of geological software such as:
- QGIS
- Datamine
- MicroMine
- Leapfrog
- Valid Code B Driver’s Licence.
Registration with a recognized professional organization, such as the Geological Society of South Africa as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.), will be an advantage.
